Richard Franklin Jones' Obituary
Richard Franklin “Frank” Jones, 101, died Monday, October 19, 2015 at Allen Morgan Health Center. Frank was born in the family home on the northwest corner of Madison and Belvedere in Memphis on November 16, 1913 to Samuel and Loretta Jones. He attended Central High School and Northwestern University. Frank left before graduation to serve six (6) years in the Panama Canal Zone. In 1945 he enlisted in the Marine Corps and finished his duty serving amongst the first U.S. Occupation forces in Japan. After the war years, Frank returned to Memphis to join Joyner Heard Realty with his brother Hall Jones. In 1949, Frank married Lillian Prewitt, the eldest daughter of a Tennessee Supreme Court Chief Justice, Allen Prewitt. Frank retired after 33 years with Joyner, Heard and Jones Mortgage Company and worked 14 years for the Hunter Fan Manufacturing Company. Frank loved to work, so after retiring he worked as a volunteer for the Exchange Club Family Center of Memphis where he served for over 14 years. In 2003, Frank was named Memphis Area Volunteer of the Year because of his service to the Exchange Club and also for his efforts for the Literacy Council where he taught others to read and write. Frank was preceded in death by his four siblings, his brother, Hall Jones; his sister, Pauline Jones Hord; his brother, Brig. Gen. George Jones; and his sister, Louise Jones Hughes. His survivors include his wife of 66 years, Lillian Prewitt Jones; his son, Richard Franklin Jones Jr. of Memphis; his daughter, Caroline Prewitt Jones of Alabaster, AL; and three grandchildren, Marion Thorn Jones of New York City; Richard Franklin Jones III and Eugene Thorn Jones, both of Baton Rouge, LA. A Memorial Service will be held at Second Presbyterian Church in the Chapel on Thursday, October 22, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. A reception will follow in the Salmon Room. Private Graveside services will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery.
