Richard Carter's Obituary
Richard Carlton Carter of Memphis, TN, passed away peacefully on November 14, 2025, at the age of 55.
Born and raised in Memphis, TN, Richard was a lifelong Memphian who loved his city. He attended Central High School, later attending the University of Memphis. Following college, Richard spent nearly 30 years in the food service industry; beginning his career with Hardin Sysco Foods and ending with Ben E. Keith Food Services. He was a loved professional in the industry and made many friendships over the years.
Richard’s playground was Hot Springs, Arkansas. He enjoyed spending time on Lake Hamilton in the summer and at the racetrack in the spring, watching the horses with his family.
Richard spent countless hours on the baseball field as a volunteer coach for Germantown Baseball League. His greatest joy was standing on third base waiting for his son, Davis.
Richard was a H Club member and Houston High School Booster. You could often find him under the Friday night lights cheering for his Mustangs. Watching them win their first state championship filled him with pride.
A proud Ole Miss dad, he would often happily share stories and photos about Davis with anyone who would listen.
Richard was involved with Carnival Memphis for many years. He was a longstanding member of the Grand Krewe of Osiris. He particularly enjoyed the years of tomfoolery, riding the big green bus as a member of the Secret Order of the Boll Weevils, where he was affectionately known as Booger. He was also a longstanding member of the Autozone Liberty Bowl Board of Directors where he served as the Co-Chairman of the Pregame Buffett Committee and a faithful volunteer for over 30 years.
Richard met the love of his life, Amy Sullivan Carter, on a blind date. They were happily married for 22 years.
Richard is preceded in death by his mother, Betty Russell Carter, and sister-in-law, Audrey Gayle Sullivan Wilkerson.
In addition to his wife, Amy and son, Davis, he is survived by his father, Harvey Wallace Carter, Jr, brother, Russell Collins Carter (Marilyn); brothers-in-law, Jeff Sullivan (Maura) and Sam Wilkerson; nephews, Jack Sullivan and Casey Sullivan; and nieces, Lainey Carter and Lily Carter.
He was the greatest Papa to only one special person, his pride and joy son, Davis, but was cherished by many others including Kaitlyn Gilliland and the Fab 5, Luke Snyder, Drew Snyder, Carter Schmidt, Tripp Ledford, and Davis Carter.
The service for Mr. Carter will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church (3245 Central Avenue Memphis, TN 38111) on November 21, 2025, at 12:00pm a reception to follow at St. John’s.
