Ray Young's Obituary
Ray Young, 93, passed from this life on October 1, 2024 in Collierville, Tennessee. He was born March 2, 1931 to the late Raymond and Arvie Young in Enville, Tennessee but lived most of his life in Memphis. He was preceded in death by his wife of 71 years, Virginia Young. He is survived by his brother, Doyle Young, and his sons Stephen and his wife Sandy, Stan and his wife Sylvia, Scott and his wife Beth Ami, Spence and his wife Missy, and Walter and his wife Sherry, 10 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
He was a Scottish Rite 32nd Degree Mason, a Bible reading Christian, and a member of Macon Road Baptist Church. He recently told someone that he had read every word of the Bible, and he believed every word of it.
He attended Messick High School in Memphis in his early years but graduated from Waverly Hall School in Memphis in 1949 and immediately went to work in sales. He was a professional salesman who had successful careers in the insurance business with Life & Casualty Co., with MFA Oil Co., Armour & Co., and for many years was Vice President and Sales Manager of Martin & Herring Builders before having his own real estate company, Ray Young Realtors. He like dealing with people and making things happen for them.
Ray made a point to steer his sons into sales and to quote him, "There is always somebody looking for a good salesman, and if you can sell, you will never go hungry."
He loved the woods and owned a large tree farm in McNairy County where he enjoyed campouts and time spent hunting with his sons.
Since retiring in 1993, his favorite hobbies have been watching his trees grow and seeing his sons and grandsons enjoy the outdoors.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Samaritan's Purse.
