Rachel Greer's Obituary
Rachel Flora Greer went to be with her Lord on Palm Sunday while surrounded by her family at the St. Catherine Center in Waco, Texas. Visitation will be held at Bellevue Baptist Church’s Pollard Chapel, 2000 Appling Road in Cordova, Tennessee on Thursday, March 28, 2013, at 12:30 pm. Afterwards, family and friends will celebrate Rachel’s life at 2 pm in the Chapel. A graveside service will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery 5668 Poplar Avenue, Memphis, Tennessee.Rachel was born on June 18, 1927, in Shuqualak, Mississippi to Ben C. Flora and Cora Nester Flora. Her parents died when she was very young, and she was raised by her beloved Aunts Nora Thornell and Mattie Nester. She placed her faith in Jesus Christ as a small child and remained a faithful and active Christian for the rest of her life.During World War II, Rachel served as an Executive Secretary for Ingalls shipyards in Pascagoula, Mississippi. Following her time there, she attended and graduated from East Mississippi Junior College. She then trained as a Flight Attendant and served with Trans World Airlines during the dawn of the Golden Age of Air Travel.In 1949 she married Dan B. Greer. Their children survived them and are Janet Greer Crawford and her husband Phillip of Waco, Texas, and D. Timothy Greer of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. She also leaves a grandson, LT Phillip T. Crawford, III USN of Norfolk, Virginia. Rachel also leaves Dr. Fook Choon “William” Lee and his wife Ana of Albuquerque, New Mexico, whom she loved as her own. She also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins in Mississippi and Virginia.Rachel was a faithful member of Bellevue Baptist Church in Memphis for over 60 years. Her membership spanned the pastorates of Drs. R.G. Lee, Ramsey Pollard, Adrian Rogers, and Steve Gaines. During her 55 years of teaching service at Bellevue, her crowning contribution to the church was teaching the Ruth Class for over 25 years. She made many friends and touched a great many lives during that time.Rachel was a warm, positive person who had a contagious laugh and loved to pray for people whenever the opportunity arose. Her determined spirit in the face of adversities was an inspiration for many people.Rachel remembered and was grateful for all her faithful caregivers in Memphis and the loving care they had given her.After her move to Waco, Texas she became a member of Columbus Avenue Baptist Church and its Senior Adult Sunday School. The family wishes to thank the members of Columbus for the way they welcomed Rachel into their midst and supported us through her final days.
