Phyllis Louise Drenner Pope's Obituary
Phyllis Louise Drenner Pope, age 97, of Memphis died on February 25, 2016 at the Memphis Jewish Home, where she had been a resident for a number of years. Mrs. Pope was born February 1, 1919 on a farm near Mound Valley, Kansas, and moved with her family to Memphis in 1936. In 1939, she married Ben Duncan Pope of Memphis, a marriage that lasted more than 64 years. Mr. Pope preceded Mrs. Pope in death as did a son, Richard Ray Pope, her brother, William E. Drenner, and her parents, Ray E. Drenner and Fern Volmer Drenner. Mrs. Pope leaves a daughter, Kathy Pope Gott of Oakland, TN; a son, Robert Dean Pope of Richmond, VA and three grandchildren, Justin N. N. Pope of Farmville, VA, Kristin Nolte of Hopkinsville, KY and Daniel Gott of Murfreesboro, TN as well as five great grandchildren. Mrs. Pope was an enthusiastic and talented cook who developed her own special recipes for a wide variety of foods, including ravioli and steak and gravy breakfasts. She and her husband were devoted sport fans. For many years, they had season tickets to the University of Memphis basketball and football games, and regularly traveled to St. Louis to see their beloved Cardinals play. Mrs. Pope was a member for many years of Springdale United Methodist Church and later Mullins United Methodist Church. A funeral service will be held on Sunday, February 28 at 1 pm at Memorial Park Funeral Home; the family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 12 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to Mullins United Methodist Church or to the Memphis Jewish Home and Rehab, where Mrs. Pope received loving and supportive care for the last years of her life, or to the charity of the donor’s choice.Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery, 5668 Poplar Ave. Memphis, TN 38119. “Celebrating Life… Behind the Stone Wall” Please check back for updated obituary information.
