Dr. Phillip Hayes Dirmeyer's Obituary
Phillip Hays Dirmeyer, who ran his family medical practice at Park and Mt. Moriah for 40 years, died at his Collierville home Tuesday. He was 76. Visitation will be Friday evening from 5-8, with the Rosary at 7:30 p.m., and a funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, all at Church of the Holy Spirit Catholic Church, where he was a longtime parishioner. Dr. Dirmeyer grew up in Midtown and worked from an early age at his father’s drugstore at the corner of Nelson and Barksdale. He graduated from Catholic High and St. Ambrose College in Davenport, Iowa before studying family medicine at the University of Tennessee Medical School in Memphis. Caring for patients of all ages and walks of life was his passion. He was proud of his affiliations with the Haiti Medical Missions of Memphis, Birthright of Memphis, the Norfolk Southern Railway Physicians Association, and St. Peter Villa. He also enjoyed serving as sports team doctor for various Memphis high schools. After retirement, he volunteered for MIFA and the Church Health Center. Dr. Dirmeyer was a big man with a big heart, and he knew how to enjoy life! He considered his 52-year marriage to his wife, Ciscily Carter Dirmeyer, and raising his children and grandchildren to be his greatest accomplishments. But he also loved hunting, fishing, golf, travel, the beach at Destin, Lake Hardeman, UT football and Cardinal baseball. He was devoted to his Catholic faith. In addition to his wife, Dr. Dirmeyer is survived by his daughter, Ann, and her husband, David Crislip of Piperton, TN; his four sons, Phillip, Jr. and his partner Debora Wilson of Middleton, TN, Drew and his wife, Debbie, of Maryville, TN, David and his wife, Kimberly, of Daphne, AL, and Tim of Memphis; and ten grandchildren, Joseph, Haley, William, Steven, James Carter, and Henry Dirmeyer, and Lauren, David, Jr., Ciscily, and Will Crislip. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Barbara Dirmeyer, and her family, his aunt, Carolyn Hays, and his uncle, Art Hays. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Marjorie Hays Dirmeyer, and his brother, Edward C.
