Peter F. Freund's Obituary
Dr. Peter Freund, 87, passed away September 13, 2013. Born in Prague, Czechoslovakia on May 8, 1926, he immigrated at the age of 11 with his parents to Switzerland and enrolled in a Moravian School. At the age of 12 Peter’s parents immigrated to the United States and Peter was moved to England to finish his schooling. After graduation Peter immigrated to the United States and attended City College. He was soon drafted to the United States Army and sent back to Europe to interrogate prisoners, because he was fluent in five languages. After the war he returned to New York and received his PhD from New York University. Mr. Freund taught at Hofstra University in New York and Ohio University in Athens, Ohio before moving to Memphis in 1970 with his family. He was Chairman of the Finance at Memphis State, Insurance and Real Estate Department. While there he was one of the founders and 1st Director of the Memphis School of Banking. After retiring from the University of Memphis he continued to work as a consultant in credit life insurance. He was also an avid stamp and coin collector. He is preceded by is first wife Greta Freund. Peter is survived by his wife, Joan (Jodie) Rucker Freund and daughter, Vicky Rehill. There will be a memorial service at 11 a.m. Tuesday, September 17 at Memorial Park Funeral Home.
