In the absence of anything resembling artistic ability, I still took two year’s of art for the simple reason that I enjoyed being around Mr. Bowman in his classroom. Even though his classes contained a mix of students, from the gifted artist to the talentless, but curious student to those simply looking for an “easy A”, Mr. Bowman met us all with an equal desire to teach and inspire.Great teachers can be measured in many different ways, but perhaps the most meaningful is their ability to leave lasting impressions on those they teach. My wife, who I didn’t meet until almost 20 years after high school, told me that she had read that Mr. Bowman had died. The fact that she knew he had taught me in high school and that his passing would mean something to me is a clear example that he left a lasting impression on at least one of his students. We all had those teachers that left some type of lasting imprint on our lives. For me, that list includes the patient, kind and smiling Mr. Bowman. My condolences to Peter’s family and friends.
