Peggy M. McGowan's Obituary
Peggy Mahoney McGowan, 62, passed away on Sunday, September 29, 2013. Peggy was born in Memphis, Tennessee, and graduated from Immaculate Conception high school and the University of Memphis. While in college, she worked for WMC-TV Memphis running camera. She moved to California pursuing her dream of working in Los Angeles and took a job with NBC. A pioneer as a camerawoman, Peggy had 6 Emmy nominations and was the first woman ever to win an Emmy for “Best Camera Operator” on Dick Clarke’s Live Wednesday in 1978. She returned to Memphis a few years later and worked for Fed Ex as a video editor in their corporate TV facility for 20 years. Following early retirement, she pursued her favorite hobbies of quilting and needlepoint. Peggy met Robert McGowan, the love of her life, when she was 40 years old. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family. Peggy avidly encouraged people to pursue their dreams despite the obstacles. She was a loving wife, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend.Peggy was preceded in death by her husband Robert McGowan III, her father John Thomas Mahoney Sr., her brother John Thomas Mahoney Jr., and her sister Mary Anne Gorman. She is survived by her mother Peggy Davis Mahoney, her twin brother Patrick Joseph Mahoney (Margaret), her loving in-laws Robert and Ellen McGowan, her sister-in-law Beth McGowan, her brother-in-law Clyde Gorman, her sister-in-law Sherry Mahoney, and multiple nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends at 3 p.m., Saturday, October 5, with a memorial service to follow at 4 p.m. at Memorial Park Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Service Over Self (SOS).
