Peggy Rutland Griggs' Obituary
Peggy Rutland Griggs, born April 13, 1932 passed away peacefully on August 18, 2022. She is survived by her sons Jody (Michelle) Griggs, Hal (Paula) Griggs, and her daughter Amy (Greg) Crone. Her grandchildren Halle Griggs, Neely Crone, John Crone and Jamie Grigsby. And her great grandchildren Emery and Grayson Grigsby.
She was preceded in death by her sisters Kay, Vera, Gloria, Willie Nell, and a brother Earl Jr.
Peggy Griggs loved her family and her family loved her. Children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, all were the most important part of her life.
She loved her church, first her active membership for over 50 years at Underwood United Methodist Church, and most recently her membership at St Louis Catholic Church.
Three rules that best sum up how our mom lived her life. First, you never give up on your team, regardless of the score (forget leaving a game early to beat the traffic). Second, it is never too hot to play golf (she once asked why there was a need for a heat index). And last, if it is Sunday, you need to be in church.
She loved Tiger football and basketball and was a season ticket holder. She attended the 1973 NCAA Final Four in St. Louis and after the semifinal game purchased two tickets from one of the losing teams. She then spent the day arranging transportation for her then teenage sons to attend the championship game. To this day we aren’t sure who we rode with, but it was an experience our mom wanted to make sure we had.
To say she was an avid golfer is an understatement. Nothing gave her greater joy than the time spent playing 18 holes with the women’s group at Wyndyke, where she was a member for over 60 years. And quick to mention that she was proud of her two holes-in-one, as well as her 30 years of service as an official scorer with the FedEx St. Jude golf tournament.
And she relished the yearly pilgrimage to Atlanta to root for her beloved Braves, always packing her baseball jerseys bearing her favorite player’s name.
To know a person is to know their friends. And Peggy Griggs had the best friends. Work friends from her time at Ford Motor Credit. Church friends. Golf friends. The list goes on and on. We thank each and every one of you for loving and caring about her.
A quote that best represents her life: “It is not the years in your life, but the life in your years that counts.” Peggy Griggs had plenty of both.
Visitation will be held from 12:30 p.m. until the service time of 2:00 p.m., Saturday, August 27th at St. Louis Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials be made to St. Louis Church or the charity of your choice.
