Peggy Dwight's Obituary
Peggy Dwight
Peggy departed from her family home to be with Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, on Sunday morning, July 27th. She was born and raised in North Carolina. During her happy childhood, she and her family would spend time vacationing together in the mountains or by the ocean. Peggy was a resident of Germantown, TN, for 52 years. Peggy married the love of her life, soon-to-be Captain Henry (Hank) Dwight, while he was in the US Air Force, training to be a pilot. They met on a “blind date”, got engaged 3 months later and married 3 months after that. She always said that God had blessed her with the most wonderful husband, father, and grandfather all wrapped up into one. To God be the glory. Peggy enjoyed the many places throughout the US and abroad that the US Air Force took them. Hank, being a B-52 aircraft commander with a gun strapped to his side, ready to go to war, was a concern for her; however, she loved being by his side throughout his 40 years as a pilot (20 years in the USAF and 20 years with FedEx). Peggy and Hank joined GBC under the pastorship of Dr. Ken Story as soon as they moved to Germantown. Throughout their years at Germantown Baptist Church, Hank served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher, and Peggy served alongside him by employing her spiritual gifts of hospitality and giving. Peggy was best known for her parties, which often incorporated extravagant decorations and food presentations. For one of her parties, she had Hank cut and set up 20 pine trees to decorate for their Deacon’s Christmas Party in the church gymnasium. (This may or may not have happened twice.) She also loved celebrating birthdays for each member of her family and holiday dinners, which often included games and prizes.
She was preceded in death by her precious husband of 57 years, Hank Dwight, her parents Kirby and Janie Hawkins, and her sister, Nora Marie Hawkins Leonard (Everett). She is survived by her dearly loved sister, Deborah Jane Hawkins Dean (Buck). Peggy is also survived by her four children, whom she deeply loved: Greg Dwight (Gina), Gary Dwight (Michele), Cindy Cain (Mark), and Kathy Smalley (Al). She is survived by nine grandchildren: Daniel, Nicole, Cody (Jessica), Hunter (Ivy), Stephanie, Matthew, Rachel,
Kimmy, and Jessie (Ethan). She is also survived by 5 great-grandchildren: Macy, Sully, Sunny, Soarrin, and Haisley. If you ask Peggy, “What is the most important question you could ever ask a person?” she would say: “Are you ready to meet Jesus?”
Some of her last words as she was praying out loud to the Lord were, “Thank you, Jesus, thank you, Jesus, thank you, Jesus!”
