Patrick E. Tierney's Obituary
Patrick E. Tierney Pat Tierney, 77, of Germantown, Tennessee passed away while surrounded by his loved ones on September 28, 2017, after a long battle with cancer. He was born on July 3, 1940 to Edmond Gregory Tierney and Margaret Grace Jennings Tierney in Bell, California, who preceded him in death. He joins his parents, his brother Edmund, and his nephew, Michael. He is survived by his loving wife Sherree, along with his three loving children, Kevin, Denise and David, and their spouses, as well as his six grandchildren, brothers Michael and Peter, sister Ann, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was well-loved by his family, and his absence is felt deeply by all. Pat met his bride Sherree while at John Marshall High School in Los Angeles, California, and they married shortly after both had graduated and Pat had joined the United States Marine Corps. They were married for 56 years and enjoyed the last 35 together at their home in Germantown. When asked a few months ago what caught his eye about Sherree, he said, “From the first time I looked at her, that was all it took, for me.” After serving six years as a Marine, Pat worked for several different airlines. For twenty of his 44-year-long career as a navigator, flight instructor and check airman, Pat worked for FedEx and was instrumental in creating the first international flight routes for the company. He retired in 2004 from FedEx and remained close to many of his friends and coworkers there. He was also a member of the Quiet Birdmen. Pat was passionate about his many hobbies but most loved shooting and hunting. He was one of the first members of the Memphis Sport Shooting Association, and won countless medals and awards for his marksmanship in shooting clays, skeet, trap, black powder and target shooting. He loved collecting rare books and antiques, as well as every tool imaginable. There was nothing he couldn’t fix, and he was always engineering some contraption or another while enjoying time in one of his favorite hangouts, the garage. Pat also enjoyed and supported the extracurricular activities of all of his grandchildren, took great pleasure in their academic achievements, and was proud of each one. He doted on each of his three children as well, and always made a point of knowing what was going on in their lives. A Celebration of Life service will be held Saturday, October 21, at 1:00 p.m. in the Parkside Event Center at the Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery in Memphis, with a Military Honor Guard and playing of Taps immediately following
