Patricia Phillips Hurt's Obituary
Patricia Phillips Hurt of Memphis, TN died suddenly in Nashville while visiting family on May 28 at the age of 93. Pat or Nonie, as she is known by her grandchildren, great granddaughter and many friends was returning to Memphis from trip to the Blue Ridge Mountains with a daughter. Pat had a ceaseless optimism and faith that God was in His heaven and all was right with the world. She appreciated the joys, wonder and beauty of this world and was always ready to go, explore and relish this beauty and meet the people in it. She was in the wisdom of Philippians 4:6 free of all anxiety. She was a voracious reader and could never leave a bookstore empty handed. She gathered in Washington, D.C. frequently with her sons and daughters, spouses, and grand children who lived and or went to school close by. These trips often required shipping all of the books she had bought back to Memphis so she would not have to transport them on the plane. Much to the amusement and appreciation of her five children, 4 grandchildren and a great granddaughter, she thought that they were all perfect. It is possible that this belief applied more to grandchildren than to children.
Born in Granada, MS on October 9, 1927, Pat was the daughter of the late John Joseph and Geraldine Reynolds Phillips. Her father’s job with the Illinois Central Railroad took the family to Jackson, TN while Pat was still an infant. She attended elementary and high school in Jackson. Her family moved to Memphis when she a senior in high school. She graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Memphis. She attended Memphis State University where she graduated with a degree in English literature and met and married the late Everett Leon Hurt in 1948. They were married for 53 years until his death in 2001. She is also predeceased by a son, John Joseph Hurt. She missed Leon and Johnny immensely and thought of them everyday.
Pat is survived by a son, Leon Hurt of Albuquerque, NM; three daughters, Patsy Aune (Tom) of Nashville, TN, Marie Snyder of Memphis, Nancy Heideman (Rick) of Albuquerque, NM, three granddaughters, Jessica Aune, Megan Snyder Moore (Trevor), Anna Moneymaker, a grandson Zach Aune and a great granddaughter Raelynn Moore.
The family will receive relatives and friends on Sunday, June 6 from 2:00 pm until 4:00 pm at Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery, 5668 Poplar Avenue in Memphis. A mass for Christian Burial will be held on Monday, June 7 at 10:30 am at St. Michael's Catholic Church, 3863 Summer Avenue in Memphis. The burial will immediately follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.
