Olive Meier's Obituary
Olive Bell Walker Meier was born in Cooter, Missouri, on July 7, 1921. She went to be with the Lord peacefully on January 10, 2020. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward J. Meier, mother Frankie Walker, father William D. Walker, two of her brothers, Wayne Walker, and Bill Royce Walker. She is survived by her brother Larry Walker, (Becky) of Tulsa, Oklahoma, sister Nancy Walker Meadors (Kenneth) of Cartersville, Georgia, son, Donald Edward Meier (Patsy Myatt Meier) of Dallas, TX., her daughter Amy Lyn Meier of Memphis, TN., 3 grandchildren: Lara Meier Arp (Allan Arp) New Jersey, Molly Meier Darwin (Charles Darwin) Atlanta, Edward F. Meier (Amy Ward Meier) Dallas, and 8 great-children, Piney Castro Arp, Hailen Justice Arp, Ember Bell Arp, Abigail Kathleen Darwin, Audrey Claiborne Darwin, Charles Edward Darwin, Penelope Jane Meier, and Nolan Edward Meier.
Olive graduated from Gideon Missouri High School in 1938, where she was an honor student and played basketball. After graduation, she went to business school in Memphis, Tennessee. In 1943, Olive bravely caught a train from Memphis, Tennessee to Los Angeles, California to marry Edward Jesse Meier, a new inductee into the US Army. Olive was fortunate enough to accompany Ed to all of his Army postings, which included Del Mar, California,
New York City, and Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. In 1946, they returned to Memphis where they started their family, Donald Edward Meier was born in 1946, followed by Amy Lyn Meier in 1950. Their home in East Memphis has been Olive’s joy for over 60 years.
Olive and Ed dedicated themselves to God’s work at Highland Heights Baptist Church. They faithfully taught 9 year-olds in Baptist Training Union every Sunday night for many years. In 1982, Olive and Ed helped start a ministry to Cambodian refugees, and Olive has continued to be a great supporter of that ministry until her death. Olive has been a sister, mother, and grandmother to countless Cambodians helping them adjust to life in America , leading them to Jesus, and shining Christ’s light for all to see.
To family members and friends, Olive was best known for her graciousness and hospitality. She opened her home and heart to family, friends and for all of those in need.
The family is grateful for the loving and skilful care provided by Dr. and Mrs. Hugh Overstreet, and their nurses, Renee, Judy. and Dorothy. The family is also grateful for the long term caregivers, Lucille Perry, Carolyn Sims, Chandra Perry, Jerica Robinson, and Pearl Martin.
