Nina Winn's Obituary
Nina Ruth Mapes Winn passed away peacefully Friday, July 8, 2011 at age 87. She was born on February 27, 1924, in Knoxville, Tennessee to Nina and Robert Mapes. She attended Knox High School and Marion Lutheran College in Virginia. Nina is preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Howard Winn, and a son, Alan Winn. She is survived by her remaining children, Connie Johns (Beve), Fred, Steve (Lisa), and Carol (aka Jinx) Winn, and her grandchildren Whitney, Lauren, Derek, and Lee. Nina and Howard raised five children, all who attended Idlewild Elementary and Central High, where she was involved in school activities, including serving several terms as president of the PTA. Nina was always busy with enforcing homework schedules, making costumes, viewing school plays, and overseeing the general clamor of kids in school. The house on Barksdale became the setting for many festive gatherings over the years. Nina was the consummate hostess. If the kitchen light was on – and it always was – Nina was up and ready with refreshments and lively conversation. She was accepting, patient, caring, loving, and easy to talk to – and all are saddened, but share the joy of having known her. A memorial service will be conducted at Trinity United Methodist Church on Saturday, July 16, at 1pm. Visitation will be held from 11-1 preceding the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church or the charity of one’s choice. Memorial Park Funeral Home 901-767-8930
