Newton Hunt Metcalf's Obituary
On February 6, 2024 Newton Hunt Metcalf, 79, passed away peacefully at home with his family and his dogs by his side ending a long and courageous fight against cancer.
Newt was predeceased by his father, Robert Mitchell Metcalf, Jr., mother, Lorraine Newton Matthews Metcalf, step-mother, Nancy Patton Askew Metcalf, his brother Robert M. Metcalf III (Bobby) and sisters Sally Metcalf Borders and his sister-in-law, Jean Shorrock Westerman.
Newt was a fifth-generation Memphian, a member of the first graduating class of PDS, graduated MUS and the University of Tennessee where he was a member of the SAE fraternity. He attended the Goethe Institute in Germany where he met his loving wife, Barbara Shorrock from Manchester, England. He was honorably discharged from the US Army 409th Military Intelligence reserve unit in Memphis.
Always a lover of the outdoors and nature he became the owner/operator of the Green Earth Garden Center in Bartlett. After that business closed, he worked in the wholesale side of agri-business. Upon his retirement, he started to work part-time at Galloway Golf course and took pride tending the greens and fairways. He was an avid reader and loved the outdoors, whether hiking in his younger years, yard-work at home or hunting and fishing. During his life Newt raised dogs, cats, chickens, ducks, rabbits and bees. He enjoyed his second home on Wahpeton Hill in Hardy, Arkansas surrounded by the woods overlooking the Spring River. Newt could always tell a good story, often spiced with some salty language and his family never tired of hearing them as he took such joy in regaling them to a new audience. After retirement, Newt was a regular at 2PC gym where he enjoyed seeing friends.
Newt leaves behind his wife of 55 years, Barbara, his son Newton Hunt Metcalf, Jr and wife Corrie Peeler Metcalf whom he loved as his own. His grandchildren George Newton Metcalf and Katherine Jane (Kate) Metcalf were the joy of his life. Papa was at his happiest cheering them on at their soccer games. Newt also leaves two nieces, Becky Borders Wilson (Jay) and Paige Elizabeth Borders of Shreveport and a nephew William Westerman (Caroline) of England. He leaves behind his much-loved pets, Friday and Scout.
The family will receive friends for a visitation and reception on Saturday, February 17, 2024 from 1:00pm to 3:00pm at Second Presbyterian Church in the Salmon Room.
