Nell H. Maddox's Obituary
Nell H. Maddox, 90, of Memphis, crossed over into heaven the morning of Thursday, October 7, 2021, surrounded by her loving family. Nell is survived by her two daughters, Jeannie Pinon and Mary Droke (Steve) and two granddaughters, Maddie and Sophie Droke. She also leaves a surviving brother, Willis Hornsby and a sister, Janie Ross, both residing in Bolivar, TN.
Nell was preceded in death by her husband, Marion Maddox, her parents, Brooks and Pearl Hornsby, of Hornsby, TN, a sister, Elynor DeBerry, and two granddaughters, Anna and Emma Droke.
Nell was born March 31, 1931, in Memphis, TN, and graduated Bolivar Central High School, Hardeman County in 1948. She was a competitive basketball player and an avid fan of the collegiate and professional sport throughout her life. After graduation, she worked at the Bank of Bolivar before moving to Memphis and working as an accounting clerk for Union Planters Bank, Barnett Supply Company and Dr. Gale Gardner at Baptist Memorial Hospital. Her career spanned 45 years until she retired in 1995 to reap the joys of being a grandmother.
Nell was an active member of Bellevue Baptist Church for 64 years and served as the adult choir mother with the loving nickname of “Mama Nell” for the last 44 years.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any donations be made to Bellevue Baptist Church choir fund or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
