Nannie Kate Word's Obituary
Nannie Kate Austin Word went home to be with her Lord on March 25, 2009 at Briarcrest Extended Care in Ashland, MS following a long illness. Mrs. Word was born to the late Hugh S. and Addie B. Austin on December 18, 1920 in Houston, MS.Mrs. Word graduated from Houston High School in Houston, MS and later attended Memphis School of Commerce. In the early 40s she was employed by the Selective Service System in Memphis. She retired from the Social Security Administration after 34 years of service. She was an active member of Ashland Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school. She was also a member of the Eastern Star Chapter #129 in Memphis, TN. She loved nature so much she specialized in growing flowers and sharing them with others.She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Louie S. Word; her brothers, Sherman L. Austin, Olen L. Austin, James A. Austin, William H. Austin, Thomas S. Austin and Robert I. Austin. Her sisters, Lena A. Armour, Mary A. Triplett and Lucille Childs also preceded her in death.She is survived by her sister, Mrs. Elizabeth A. May of Memphis, TN as well as several nieces and nephews.Visitation will be held from 4:30-7:00p.m., Thursday, March 26, 2009. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, March 27, 2009 with entombment to follow. All services being held at Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery.In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to be sent to Ashland Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 35 in Ashland, MS 38603.
