Nannie Coleman's Obituary
Nannie Mae McMullen Coleman, 94, of Memphis, died March 6, 2010, in Cookeville, TN. Our “Nannie” was a treasure and will be missed by all who knew her. Originally of Ashland, MS, Nannie received her training as a registered nurse at Baptist Hospital in Memphis. She entered the Army as a 2nd Lieutenant and was the first commissioned female officer from Mississippi. She married a fellow Army officer, John D. Coleman, while in the service. After serving in WWII, he retired and became a civil service employee, which led their family to Alabama, Tennessee, Utah, Hawaii, and Washington. They returned to Memphis due to his illness, and after his death, she returned to work as a registered nurse to support her children, retiring from Baptist Memorial Hospital. Nannie leaves behind daughters Kathryn Coleman Maceri (Samuel) and Mary Ann Coleman, daughter-in-law Mary Coleman, granddaughters Shelley Wood, Melanie Paquette, and Katie Maceri, and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents Albert Arnold and Nannie Cox McMullen, her husband John and son John Coleman, and her siblings Mary Liles, Pauline Smith, Mary Nan Thompson, Arnold McMullen, Gene McMullen, and Billy McMullen. She is survived by siblings Arthur McMullen (Imogene), James Autry, Ruby Childers, Betty Graves, and many special friends and family members, including Annette and Peggy Bingham, Barbara LoSicco, Bill Liles, and Martha Sundberg. Funeral arrangements are pending at Memorial Park Funeral Home in Memphis, TN.
