Murray Harwood McCown, Sr.'s Obituary
A lifelong Memphian, Harwood attended Christian Brothers and Catholic High Schools. He earned a BBA and ADN Degree from Memphis State and served as a Corpsman in the US Navy.Harwood was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. Once you met him, you never forgot him. Everyone who knew him was touched by his wonderful sense of humor, his infectious laugh and his special quirkiness. He loved playing golf, Poker, trips to Tunica, Bocce Ball and being with family and friends who enjoyed participating in Mac’s Olympics. His special shirts and hats for any occasion always made him the center of attention which he never sought, but always deserved. One of his fondest memories was his 1st Hole In One, a testament to his love of the game.A registered nurse for over 32 years with 18 years at the VA Hospital, he was dedicated to patient care and retained lasting friendships. In 1998, he was Nurse of the Year for UT Bowld Hospital and later retired from Methodist Hospital.He was preceded in death by his parents Dr.O.S. McCown, Jr. and Ruth Harwood McCown Fly, step-father Wilson Fly, brothers O.S. McCown, III and Dr. James Dillard McCown and sister-in-law Judy Bell McCown. Survivors include his cherished wife, Gail Stevens McCown, son, Murray Harwood McCown, Jr. (Kolbe), daughter Melissa Hope McCown, grandson, Ethan Murray McCown and step-daughter Lauren McCown He leaves two sisters, Ruth Drewry (Bill) and Frances Whittinghill and two brothers Richard McCown and Jimmy McCown (Judy), sisters-in-law Aggie McCown and Jeanie McCown and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He also leaves his friend and former wife, Judy Kaplan McCown.Harwood reached out to everyone he met and sustained many lifetime friendships. He will forever be remembered and appreciated for the person he was, the fun times he initiated and his love for family and friends.
