Mona C. Gilliland's Obituary
Mona Cathey Gilliland, 100, passed away March 9, 2015, at Bright Glade. Her youth was spent at Union Avenue Baptist Church. She joined Audubon Park Baptist Church in 1976 where she remained an active member until her death. She was the president of the WMU and taught the Naomi/Ruth class from 1980 until 2013. Ms. Gilliland also served on several committees including the Personnel Committee. She was a 50+ year member of the Order of The Eastern Star where she served as the Worthy Matron of the Normal Whitehaven OES Chapter and as the Grand Ruth for the Grand Chapter of Tennessee. Ms. Gilliland was employed in the ready to wear industry at Grayson’s, Robinson’s and Woolco Fashionwear Corporation. In the 1970’s she was one of a very few women who traveled for business. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest B. Gilliland and is survived by nieces, Joy (Jim) Coleman and Carolyn (Bryson) Ozier and several great-nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers memorials may be sent to The Lottie Moon Christmas Offering, Audubon Park Baptist Church or Crossroads Hospice. The family will receive friends on Friday, March 13, from 10-11:30 am and a funeral service will immediately follow at Memorial Park Funeral Home.Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery, 5668 Poplar Ave. Memphis, TN 38119, “Behind the Stone Wall.”
