Milton Foust's Obituary
Milton Jack Foust, Sr., Commander, Retired, United States Coast Guard, 77 years of age, of 3049 Pignatelli Crescent, Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, died at approximately 7 AM, March 27, 2011 at The Hospice of Charleston, following a long struggle with Alzheimer’s Disease.He was born September 24, 1934 in Earle, Arkansas, where he was raised by his parents Milton and Gladys (Hall) Foust. He graduated from Earle High School and served in the United States Navy during the Korean War. After being honorably discharged from the navy he married Mary Frances Hurley of Memphis, Tennessee and attended Memphis State University (now the University of Memphis) and graduated with a degree in Marketing. Following graduation he was commisioned as an officer in the United States Coast Guard, serving in variety of capacities, including search-and-rescue operations, narcotics interdiction, aids to navigation and marine inspection. He also saw service in the Republic of Vietnam. Military awards and service decorations include:Coast Guard Meritorious Unit Commendation, Combat Action Ribbon, Navy Achievement Medal, Navy Good Conduct, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, National defense Medal, Korean Presidential Unit Citation, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnamese Campaign Medal and Vietnam Unit Ciation Civil Action Medal First Class Color. He also earned the Command-at-Sea Insignia.He and his family lived in various communities along the Gulf Coast and Missippi River, including Memphis, Panama City, St. Louis, New Orleans and Charleston. Outside of work and family, his interests included automobile mechanics and scouting, an interest he shared with his sons. He retired in 1981, having attained the rank of Commander. He then began a new career as a captain with American Cruise Lines for several more years, before finally settling in the community of Saulsbury, Tennessee. In 2007 he relocated to Mount Pleasant, South Carolina in order to be near his son, Milton Jack Foust, Jr., MD. He overcame great adversity in his lifetime and took great pride in his military career and also in the achievements of his children and grandchildren.He is survived by one son, Milton Jack, Jr., grandchildren Christina and Juan-Carlos Foust, and his sisters Jessamine Bernard of Germantown, Tennessee; Billy Jean Childress of Memphis, Tennessee and brother Bobbie G.
