Millicent S. Short's Obituary
Millicent Scudder Short, 95, longtime resident of Memphis, Germantown, Jackson and Brentwood, Tennessee died of congestive heart failure on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, in Brentwood. "Milly" as she was known to friends and family was always the smartest person in the room ...even now ... and she would be the first to tell you. She lived a long eventful life and traveled and lived all over the world. She never smoked. She never drank. She NEVER ate fruits or vegetables and she certainly wouldn't drink water. She loved Diet Coke.
Milly was born in the Territory of Hawaii in 1929 to WWI and WWII war hero Col. Irvine Callander Scudder USA and his wife Hazel Jones Scudder. As a U.S. Army brat Milly moved frequently attending 18 schools by her senior year of high school. Milly earned a BA and Masters from LSU School of Journalism. While at LSU she was editor of the 1951"Gumbo" yearbook, associate editor for LSU's literary magazine, student council officer, a member and officer of several honor societies and Chi Omega sorority. She later attended University of Georgia, University of Louisville, Spalding University and University of Memphis earning a second masters degree. She was a military weapons journalist for the US Army and a college Journalism instructor.
Milly is survived by 3 children; Susan Short, Lt. Col. Steve (Marianne) Short USAF Ret., Cindy (Lee) Schmicker; 5 grandchildren, Ben and Charlie Short, and Reagan, Celete and Camille Schmicker; Brother, Col. William Irvine (Kay) Scudder, USA Ret. and their children.
Milly was preceded in death by her husband Dr Robert Benton Short Jr. USMA.
