Mildred Ross' Obituary
Mildred Ross, 99, of Memphis, TN passed away Monday November 3, 2014 surrounded by her family and friends. She was born February, 18, 1915 in Batesville, Arkansas to Reverend Daniel B. and Erie Cook. It was well known at an early age that Mildred would become an adventurous woman of the world. She owned and piloted a plane, forged new boundaries in exploring and traveling the world over, rejoiced in the Arts, found new technologies fascinating, but most of all, she celebrated faith, family and friends.It was with the same adventuresome style Mildred had in her personal life that she carried into the business world. Working in a man’s world of advertising, Mildred retired after 45 years as a Production Manager for the advertising firm Lake, Spiro and Sherman, which became the in-house advertising firm for Plough and is now Merck. Her most distinguished advertising works included the ads for the Coppertone Baby and Maybelline products.Although Mildred had an adventuresome spirit, her favorite pastimes included spending time with her family and attending the Life’s Potential Sunday School class at Central Church, Collierville, TN.Her husband Jack Ross, whose fun-loving personality made a perfect match with Mildred, preceded her in death. Together they shared their love for family and friends. Mildred and Jack were active members of Cotton Carnival belonging to Sphinx Secret Society and the Boll Weevils. Preceding Mildred in death were her parents, sister Lorraine Perry, brother Gray Cook, niece Dixie Mitchell, and nephew Larry Blue.Mildred is survived by her daughter Linda Cortner of Memphis, a step-son Paul Parker, two grandchildren Parker Cortner (wife Susan), Vicki Sledge (husband Lee), four great-grandchildren, Jonathan Cortner (fiancée Becky Colburn), Paige Cortner, Caitlyn and Samuel Sledge.It is with special appreciation and gratitude that we recognize those who have cared for Mildred over the past year, Charleszetta Jones and Robin Brooks. Your love and commitment to Mildred’s well-being will never be forgotten. A special thanks to Dr. Light and the Light Clinic, Jenetta Holmes and Demetria Williams from Baptist Trinity Home Health Care and Hospice. Your promise to care for and keep Mildred comfortable during her final weeks were a blessing.Visitation and funeral services will be held at Central Church, Collierville, TN on November 7, 2014. Visitation will begin at 11am and the funeral will commence at 12noon. Reverends Roy Hendrix and Phil Clements of Central Church will be officiating. Interment will be at 3pm at Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery.In lieu of flowers, the family request contributions to Central Church or to one of Mildred’s favorite charities: St Jude’s Research Hospital, Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital, and Baptist Trinity Home Health Care and Hospice or to a charity of their choice.
