Mildred B Long's Obituary
Mildred B. Long, 86, passed away on Friday, August 7, 2009 at her home in Olive Branch, Mississippi. Mildred attended Middleton School and received a B.A. in Business Administration from Memphis State University.She started working at J. Strickland & Co., a manufacturer of hair and skin care products in November 1943 and later became the President of J. Strickland & Co. While serving with the company, J. Strickland & Co. has acquired all or portions of seven companies’ line of products. She was listed in the Blue Book, Who’s Who among Women of the Southwest and the National Register Who’s Who of Executives and Professionals.Mildred was involved in numerous civic organizations in Memphis including being the first female elected to the Board of the Memphis Chamber of Commerce, serving on the Board of Harding Academy for fifteen years, serving on the Board of the Sun, and fifty year member of Woodlawn Chapter No. 74 of the Eastern Star. She was a member of Woodlawn Hills Church of Christ. She enjoyed many hobbies such as traveling and gardening, roses in particular. Mildred was a world traveler by the age of 32, traveling to 65 countries throughout her life.Mildred was preceded in death by her husband, George B. Long. She is survived by her daughter, Linda L. Clifton and her husband Richard D. Clifton, step-son, George B. Long, Jr. and his wife Rosa-Nell, two granddaughters; Lynne Covington and her husband Mark and Ashley Rose and her husband Jon. She also leaves four great-grandchildren; Austin, Jennifer, Landon and Matthew Covington, four brothers; Kenneth Brown, Eugene Brown, Vernon Brown, and Gilbert Brown and three sisters; Emogene Parker, Sadie Holliday and Louise Smalley.Visitation will be held on Sunday, August 9, 2009 from 4-7 p.m. at Memorial Park Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 10 at 1 p.m. at Memorial Park Riverside Chapel with burial to follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.
