Mildred Ganong's Obituary
Mildred L. (Millie) Ganong went to be with her Lord and Savior on April 1, 2014. She was born in Rondo, Arkansas on October 9, 1933, the oldest child of Clinton Hickingbottom and Obie Maynard Hickingbottom, who preceded her in death. She graduated from Rondo High School and Harding College in Searcy, Arkansas. She graduated with a degree in education which began a long career in teaching. Her career included Helena, AR, Melborne, FL, U.S. Department of Defense teaching Air Force personnel children on bases in the Azores, Newfoundland, Japan, and Germany. After returning from Germany, she was employed by West Memphis for 6 years. In 1978 she began her work in the Memphis City Schools until her retirement in 1995. Her retirement was short lived as her love for children had her doing substitute work for Central Day School for about 6 years. She enjoyed reading and traveling throughout Europe on several occasions as well as the Scandinavian countries, Russia, Japan, China, Bangkok, Hong Kong, and Singapore. In later years they traveled in the United States and Canada which included Hawaii and Alaska. She was a member of Central Church for over 30 years where she served on the Staff Circle, a greeter, and a co-leader along with her husband as a small prayer group. Besides her husband Jim, she leaves behind four stepchildren; Steve Ganong (Celeste), Cherri Ganong Robinson (Johnny), Denise Ganong Linebarier (Chip); Don Ganong (Traci); and 11 grandchildren. She also leaves behind two sisters, Jane Darr of West Memphis, AR, and Shirley Baker (Herbert) of Salem, VA; and one brother, Jerry (Debra) Hickingbottom of Duncan, OK; along with many nieces and nephews. She will be remembered by family and friends as a loving, kind, friendly, generous and thoughtful Christian woman who loved her family and her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Visitation will be at Memorial Park Funeral Home on Poplar Friday, April 4, 2014, from 10 AM until 11:30 AM, with Funeral Service to follow. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
