Michael McGuire's Obituary
Mike “Mickey” McGuire, 84, died peacefully at home on Sept. 4, 2013. He was born Jan. 4, 1929, in Jackson, Ky. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wendell and Geneva Rolph McGuire, and his brother, Ben. He loved sports and played basketball and baseball at Lees Jr. College in Jackson where he was inducted into their Athlete Hall of Fame; at Centre College from which he graduated in 1950; and, in the Blue Grass league and was on the 1947 State champion team.In 1950, Mickey moved to Memphis and married Ann Faquin and would have celebrated their 63rd anniversary Sept 15. Beginning his career as a teacher at Levi, he soon joined World Book Encl. and worked his way up to Branch Manager in 1965 managing a territory that covered parts of five States. He won many awards including top branch in the country for 5 different years, an impressive World Book record.He loved his God and his family. He taught Sunday school for over 40 years primarily in the Friendship Class at Lindenwood Christian Church. He also attended Water Christian Church.He loved to have fun and never knew a stranger. He had a great sense of humor and often wrote skits to put on at his World Book meeting to entertain fellow managers. He made people laugh.He is survived by his wife Ann; his son Kelly and his wife Nancy, a daughter Marjorie and his son Mark; three grandchildren Kristen Ireland and her husband Jeremy, Mike and his wife Lydia, and Britton; and two great-grandchildren Lillie and Annie Ireland all of Memphis. For over thirty years, Big daddy and Grandma have gathered the entire family for dinner on Sunday evening in their home. He also leaves his two sisters Mary Joe Thorn (Bob) of Florida and Laura Sue Ritchie of Kentucky.Visitation will be Friday, Sept. 6, from 5-7pm and a memorial service Saturday at 1:00pm. at Memorial Park.
