Maxine Tullos' Obituary
Emma Maxine Montgomery Tullos, ninety-eight years of age, died March 25, 2016, at Baptist Hospice House in Collierville, TN. Funeral services will be conducted at Christ United Methodist Church in Memphis on Friday, April 1, with visitation at 9 a.m. and the funeral at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in the New Cleveland Cemetery in Cleveland, MS, at 2:30 p.m.Mrs. Tullos was born to Fred N. Montgomery and Lilly Floy Newsom Montgomery, in Crossett, AR. Her mother died when she was four, and her cousins Mr. and Mrs. T. B. Smith provided a wonderful home for Maxine and her older sister, Freddie Mae, in Cruger, MS. Maxine married Willoughby Thomas Tullos Jr in 1938. They lived in Sunflower County until 1945, when they moved to Pace, MS. Mrs. Tullos was a member of the United Methodist Church. She graduated from Delta State College and worked for the Mississippi State Department of Public Welfare in the public assistance and food Stamp programs in West Bolivar County. After retiring, she moved to Memphis to be near family. Her home was a favorite gathering place for her friends of all ages. Among her many talents were her cooking skills, and meals at her home were legendary. She was an avid gardener, and her favorite place to be was in her yard. She also excelled at doing needle work of all kinds.Mrs. Tullos was predeceased by her husband of 29 years, her son, W. T. “Bo” Tullos III, and two daughters, Fay Tullos Sanford and Lillian Ann Tullos Smith. She is survived by her daughter, Vicki Tullos Meredith, of Tucson, AZ; daughter-in-law Margaret H. Tullos, of Boyle, MS; and son-in-law Dr. Jack Sanford, of Memphis. TN. Also, she is survived by nine grandchildren: Melanie “Mel Smith” Munal; W.T. IV “Will” Tullos (Gina) and his step-children: Victoria and Alexandria Johnson; Edwin Tullos; Annie Kate Sanford Worley (Justin) and their children: Parr, Weezie, and Walt; Shelley Sanford; Jessica Sanford Tackett (Paul) and their son: Chambers; Katie Meredith Brunt (Ben) and their children: Charlie and Evie; Duncan Meredith (Kristin); and Sydney Meredith White (Russell) and their daughter: Georgia.Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery, 5668 Poplar Ave., Memphis TN 38119. “Celebrating Life….Behind the Stone Wall.”
