Maurine Flynn Newell's Obituary
MAURINE FLYNN NEWELL, died on October 16, 2013. Maurine was born on May 23, 1919 to Alvin Banks and Mary Jeannette Leach Flynn in the foothills of the Ozarks in a cabin by a waterfall. She was a descendant of territorial settlers of Arkansas. She was married for fifty years to Lester C. Newell, who preceded her in death. Maurine retired in 1982 from the position of Registrar at Brooks Memorial Art Gallery, now known as Memphis Brooks Museum of Art. While there, she researched and established the provenance of the “Portrait of Queen Henrietta Maria,” by Sir Anthony van Dyck, which was published in a small brochure. Another publication was “Registration Methods for Small Museums,” used as a teaching tool at the Appalachian Small Museums Consortium held at Western Carolina University, Cullowhee, NC, as well as, other teaching situations. For several years she assumed all curatorial duties. Upon retirement, she became active in King’s Daughters and Sons, serving four years on the Memphis and Shelby County Union Board (two years as president), eighteen years on the Home Board (nine years as president), and six years on the Foundation Board (three years as president).She spent her early years as a member of Elliston Avenue Baptist Church, but later became a member of Central Church. She is survived by one daughter, Jeri Jeannette Buchanan of Cordova; three granddaughters, Jennifer Banks Beil of Cordova, Lesley Maurine Williams of Memphis, and Carolyn Collins of Cartersville, GA; two grandsons, Alex Virgil Buchanan (Leslie Ellen) of Collierville, and Lee Roy Buchanan III (Carla) of Resaca, GA. One grandson, David Samuel Buchanan, preceded her in death. Surviving her are ten great-grandchildren and twenty great-great grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m., Sunday, October 20 at Memorial Park Funeral Home preceded by visitation at 12:30 p.m. Interment will follow in the Court of Roses at Memorial Park Cemetery.
