Mattie "Mac" Hury's Obituary
Mattie Earline McElrath “Mac” Hury, Born in Cullman, Alabama April 24, 1922, she moved with her husband, the late Henry Hadley Hury, to Memphis in 1941. As a homemaker and mother she was active in the community and in her churches, Central Christian and Lindenwood, serving as a Girl Scout leader, college ministry sponsor, and in various offices of the Christian Women’s Fellowship. She was a dedicated gardener, enthusiastic bridge player, avid reader, and sometime antiques restorer. Despite an innate modesty and shyness she became, as the wife of a pastor, an informal counselor, and was significantly influential in the lives of scores of women and men over several decades, respected and loved for her kindness, generosity, and insight. In the early 1960s she studied at the precursor of the Memphis Theological Seminary and has been for many years an Elder Emeritus of Lindenwood Christian Church. She and her husband were married for 56 years. She is survived by her daughter, Judith Hury and her husband, Stephen Morgan of Memphis; her son, Henry Hadley and his wife, Marilyn Adams Hury, Jr. of Louisville, Kentucky; her granddaughter, Ryan Mckenzie and her husband, Dr. Lawrence O’Malley of Greenville, South Carolina; Amy Elizabeth Morgan and her husband, Scott Payne of Louisville, Kentucky; her sister-in-law, Jacqueline McElrath, and two nephews and their families, of Decatur, Alabama. Mrs. Hury began her forever life with her Savior (and husband) on April 1, 2015. Family and friends are invited to honor and celebrate her life on Saturday, April 4. The family will receive friends from 9:30-11:30am with service to immediately follow. All services will be at Memorial Park Funeral Home. In keeping with her wishes, her family requests that in lieu of flowers memorial gifts be made to the music program of Lindenwood Christian Church.
