Mattie Lou Horn Cummings' Obituary
Mattie Cummings was born on April 29, 1933 in Water Valley, KY to Goldie & Birdie Arant and went home to be with her Lord on June 30, 2021 at the age of 88. She was preceded in death by her parents; her siblings, Raymond Arant, Thelma Mead, Dottie Willard, Al Arant, Jimmy Arant and step brother, Perry Arant ; her loving husbands, Jim Horn and Dan Cummings, and her great-granddaughter, Hollyn Grace Rodgers.
She is survived by her daughters Pat (Jimmy) Rodgers and Hope (Chris) Pittman; grandchildren Ashley Rodgers, Jonathan Rodgers (Alicia), Olivia (Dylan) Dempsey, Audrey Pittman and Parker Pittman; great-grandchildren Savannah Rodgers, Leighton Rodgers, Brooks Rodgers and Gabe Rodgers; step-daughters Renee Swindol and Jan (Bill) Taylor and their families; and many nephews and nieces and their families.
Mattie and her family moved to Cardwell, MO. She was always proud to be from the “show me” state and was a big St. Louis Cardinal fan who watched the games whenever she could. She’d say “if the Cardinals weren’t playing there wasn’t much to watch on TV!”
She was a member of Merton Avenue Baptist Church for over 40 years where she was very active in the choir, WMU, Vacation Bible School and served on various committees. She was also the hostess for the Wednesday Night Suppers for many years cooking sometimes for 200 people. She loved serving others by helping to take care of members who had no family in town to delivering food baskets at Thanksgiving and Christmas. She was always looking for those who needed a helping hand or word of encouragement.
She had been an active member of Leawood Baptist (Macon Road) for the last 15 years serving in the choir, WMU, Vacation Bible School, SAMs and the Mission House Ministry. Anytime there was a meal at the church she was involved. She loved her Sunday School class and made many new friends. They would go out to eat Sunday lunch together. She, Sarah Huff and Ollie Billings became known as the three musketeers! They served at church together and loved being together. She and Mrs. Sara had late night phone calls almost every night just to check on each other.
She loved her family so much and was proud of each of them. She taught her daughters to be strong, independent women by her example. She was a loving caregiver to each of her husbands. Her daughters thought she was the smartest and wisest person they knew and she wanted all of her kids to learn all they could. She was proud of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was able to attend each of her grandchildren’s high school graduation, the last being in May of this year and two of the grandchildren’s weddings. She was always there for her family, helping when the grandbabies came along, bringing meals, or coming to help when the parents were worn out! Many family gatherings revolved around her delicious catfish dinners! She wanted to be a part of their lives as much as she could, from transporting to work, attending piano recitals, soccer & basketball games to driving 7 hours by herself to attend a grandchild’s birthday party!
She loved to dance. She and Jim enjoyed going to the senior center dances each week for many years. She learned to line dance and could really hang in with the young folks. After he passed away, she didn’t go for a long time and then she started going to the dances and met Dan Cummings who she said “was just a friend.” That friendship developed into their sweet love story and they continued to go dancing until his health declined. She was a devoted, loving caregiver to both of her husbands.
She loved the Lord with all her heart. When she would meet someone in the store or even when she was in the hospital, she would ask if they were a Christian. If not, she would share how the Lord had blessed her life. She always had a kind word to encourage someone else.
The family will receive friends from 11:30 a.m., until the service time at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 7, 2021 at Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
