Mary Jo Chumley Ray's Obituary
Mary Jo Ray, age 75, of Bartlett, Tennessee, passed away Saturday evening peacefully at her home. Born and raised in Memphis, Mary Jo spent her entire life in the city she loved.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Mary and Joseph Chumley. She is survived by her devoted husband, Tommy Ray; her son, Michael Williams, and his wife Brooke Williams; her step daughters, Natalie Payne and Ashley Bodine, and her husband Brandon Bodine, and her sister, Vicki Wade. She was the proud grandmother of Reagan and Knox Williams, Brody Bodine, and Katelyn and Sara Payne. She also leaves behind many dear friends, colleagues, and former students, whose lives she deeply touched.
Mary Jo dedicated 40 years to teaching with the majority of her time at St. Agnes Academy, where she inspired generations of students through her compassion, patience, and unwavering commitment to education. She had a profound impact on everyone who knew her — she is lovingly remembered for her warmth, humor, and genuine care for others.
A lifelong Memphis fan, Mary Jo cheered proudly for the Memphis Tigers, RiverKings, and the St. Louis Blues, always bringing her infectious spirit to every game day. She was also a faithful member of Providence Baptist Church, where she found great comfort and community.
Visitation will be held Friday, October 10th, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Memorial Park Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow on Sunday, October 12th, at 2:00 p.m., with the committal immediately after.
Mary Jo’s kindness, laughter, and love will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate to know her.
