Mary Belle Rand, 82, a long time resident of Yazoo City and recently of Wesley Meadows Retirement Community of Hernando, MS, passed away at the Germantown Methodist Hospital on March 8 following a brief battle with Acute Leukemia. Funeral Services will be held Saturday March 13 at 11:00 at the First Presbyterian Church of Yazoo City with burial at the Glenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be held Friday March 12 from 5:00 until 8:00 at the Church. Father Jim Arnold, Mrs. Rand’s Chaplain at Wesley Meadows, will officiate. Mrs. Rand was born September 3, 1927 in Yalabousha County, MS, the fourth of six children of the late Jack and Sarah Treloar of Water Valley, MS. She was preceded in death by her husband, businessman and sportscaster Mr. Fred T. Rand, III of Yazoo City, in 1962. Following his death, Mrs. Rand, a first grade school teacher at Main Street Elementary School, took over the running of the family business, The American Steam Laundry and Cleaners, which was started in Yazoo City in 1903. She was the first woman member of the Yazoo City Chamber of Commerce. Mrs. Rand was an active member of the Republican Party in Yazoo City going back to 1960 and was a one-time GOP candidate for Yazoo City Mayor. She also was on the first school board for Manchester Academy, where two of her children attended school. After her first retirement in 1982, she began working for The Yazoo Cleaners, where she worked until 2000. In her final years, she enjoyed attending Ole Miss sporting events, travel, bridge, and visiting with family. She spent some of that time living with family, some in Yazoo City, and some in a retirement community near Memphis, TN. She is survived by her sister, Jane Werner of Melbourne, Florida; her sisters-in-law Mary Gladys Treloar of Clinton, MS, Lavonia Treloar of Oxford, MS, Mae Treloar of Pontotoc, MS; and her brothers-in-law Tom Rand of Bethesda, MD and Chuck Hall of Diamond Head, MS. She was preceded in death by her brothers Jack Treloar and his wife Faye of Ridgeland, MS, Joe Treloar of Clinton, MS, Buster Treloar of Water Valley, MS, Bud Treloar of Pontotoc, MS; and her sister-in-law Martha Helen Hall of Diamond Head, MS. “NiNi”, as she was named by her grandson Dylan, also leaves behind her daughter Sara Byars and husband Karl of Columbia, MD and their son Dylan; daughter Miriam Hugentobler and husband Marc of Salt Lake City, UT and their children Sara, Grey, and Drew; and son Fred T. Rand, IV and wife Kay of Memphis, TN and their daughter Kaitlyn and granddaughter Kylie. Pall bearers are Governor Haley Barbour, Dan Lehman, Dr. Randy Middleton, Jimmy Treloar, Walker Williamson, and Dr. Charles Woodall. Mrs. Rand loved Mississippi and Yazoo City in particular. She made new friends wherever she went, but she always regaled them with stories of Yazoo City and its rich heritage. She has gone to be with her Lord and Savior in a place where her Ole Miss Rebels will never lose. She will be missed by all who knew her. The family is asking that memorials be made to the American Cancer Society.
