Mary G. Jordan's Obituary
Mary Gordon Jordan residing at Trezevant Place, Mary passed away after a long illness on Wednesday, December 10, 2014. Mary was born in Parkin, Arkansas on September 13, 1923, and moved to Memphis as a young girl. She attended the University of Memphis campus school, Central High School, and the University of Tennessee at Knoxville where she was a member of AOPI sorority. Mary had a strong faith, loved her Church, and was a member of Germantown Presbyterian Church for many years. She was active in a number of civic and cultural organizations including being a past officer of Les Passe, a member of the Women’s Exchange, the Suburban Garden Club of Germantown, the Daughters of the American Revolution and Arawata Garden Club. Mary was an avid gardener and loved flowers. For a number of years she served on the flower committee at Germantown Presbyterian Church where she arranged flowers for the sanctuary. Mary was also an avid collector of antiques, and was very knowledgeable in many areas of American, Oriental and European art and antiques. She had many valued friends from all walks of life, and enjoyed time spent with both the young and the old. Having resided in Memphis for most of her life, many of her friends were close and life-long. Mary loved her family dearly, and they were always her main interest, love and concern. This was evidenced by the example of her faith and spirit, as well as her loving generosity. One of the highlights of her life was having “grandparent’s day” with her beloved husband Bob, entertaining his and her grandchildren one day a week for many years. She also delighted in having her family gather at her home to celebrate Thanksgiving with all the trimmings. Mary is preceded in death by her husband Dr. Robert G. Jordan Jr., and is survived by three sons, Cavett Conaway, Alex Conaway (Mimsy), and Edwin Conaway (Donna). She leaves a stepdaughter, Harriett Jordan Robinson (Peter), Carol Jordan Richardson (Stewart), widow of stepson Alfred Jordan and Mimi Jordan Adams, widow of Robert Jordan III. Mary also leaves grandsons Kirk Conaway, Scott Conaway, Gordon Conaway (Renee), Shea Conaway, and Matthew Conaway, and granddaughter Mary Conaway, as well as step-grandchildren RG Jordan (Tori), Harris Jordan (Anna), Ben Jordan, Chip Kahn (Jen) and Phoebe Howe (Geoff). She is also survived by her brother M.M. (Jack) Gordon (Mary Alice), and was preceded in death by her brothers A. W. Gordon, Jr. and John K. Gordon as well as her sisters Esther Lantz and Helen Gordon. A visitation at Germantown Presbyterian Church in the Church’s Warren Hall will be held on Monday, December 15, 2014 at 11 a.m. followed by a church service in the sanctuary at 12:30 p.m. A Private graveside service will follow for immediate family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to the Germantown Presbyterian Church music program or to the Trezevant Foundation.
