Mary Catherine Lynn Hitchings' Obituary
Mary Catherine Lynn Hitchings, 84, a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, died Monday, December 29th. She is survived by her daughter Lynn Albano and her husband Peter of Memphis; her son Rev. Frank A. Hitchings III and his wife Mary Vassar of Lookout Mountain, GA; and her grandchildren Catherine (Hitchings) Plating and her husband Zach, Mary Manning Hitchings, and Frank Albert Hitchings IV all of Lookout Mountain.She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years Frank Albert Hitchings Jr., her parents John Robert Lynn and Gilmore Bicknell Lynn, and her brother John Robert Lynn.Mrs. Hitchings attended St Mary’s Episcopal School and Rhodes College (formerly Southwestern). She was an active member of Independent Presbyterian Church since the early 1970s serving for many years in the choir and on the music committee. A former teacher at St. Mary’s, she assumed the position of director of St. Mary’s annual Christmas pageant in 1975 when her mother retired from the role. It was a tradition she cherished for decades and handed off to her daughter in recent years.She later was in real estate for over 30 years with The Simmons Company and then French & Company. For many years she was involved in Les Passees and enjoyed many other interests such as antiques, travel, and gardening.The family would like to thank the staff at Elect Homecare, especially Shanna Herron and Sharon White, for the loving care they provided to Mrs. Hitchings over the past year.The visitation will be held at Independent Presbyterian Church on Friday, January 2nd at 11:30 a.m. with the memorial service to follow at 1:00 p.m.The family requests memorials to be sent to Independent Presbyterian Church, Lookout Mountain Presbyterian Church or to the “John Robert and Gilmore Bicknell Lynn Scholarship Fund” at St. Mary’s Episcopal School.Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery, 5668 Poplar Ave. Memphis, TN 38119, “Behind the Stone Wall.”
