Mary Elizabeth Burghen's Obituary
Mary Elizabeth Burghen, 78, passed away November 28, 2015. She was born September 23, 1937 in Memphis, TN to Bedford and Leona Cuff. She graduated from Whitehaven High School and the Mississippi University for Women. While her husband, George attended medical school, Mary Elizabeth taught math and science to help support them during their early years of marriage. She is survived by her husband, George Burghen; children, Elizabeth Burghen Fryman (Edward) and Susan House (Chuck); grandchildren, Anna and Allison House and John and Brittany Fryman. She was a longtime member of Christ United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the University of Tennessee Health Science Center’s Faculty Women’s Club and the Brooks League and contributed her time and talents to the American Diabetes Association and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. She cofounded Camp Hopewell Diabetes Session in 1976. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m., Wednesday, December 2 and funeral services will be 2 p.m., Thursday, December 3 at Memorial Park Funeral Home. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery, 5668 Poplar Ave. Memphis, TN 38119. “Celebrating Life… Behind the Stone Wall”
