Martha Beatrice Roman's Obituary
Martha Beatrice Roman, 89, passed away July 1, 2023, in Hattiesburg, Miss., following a long illness. Born Dec. 23, 1933, in Barranquitas, Puerto Rico, Martha was the youngest child in the large family of Ramon and Maria Vazquez. She was nicknamed “Titi,” which is Auntie in Spanish, because she became an aunt at a young age.
She moved with her family to Brooklyn, N.Y., at age 15, where she graduated high school. She later joined the Woman’s Army Corps, in which she served from 1955 through 1957. She met and married her husband, Jose Antonio Roman, in the U.S. Army. They were stationed at many bases throughout his career, including Schweinfurt and Aschaffenburg, Germany, and in the Panama Canal Zone. Martha was a dedicated U.S. patriot throughout her life.
She loved to travel, and she and her husband traveled throughout Central America and enjoyed many trips to countries in Europe when they were stationed in Germany. She and her family lived in Columbia, S.C., for several years, where she worked as an executive assistant for the Baptist Hospital system.
Martha and her husband later lived in Munford, Tenn. She was a parishioner at St. William Catholic Church in Millington, Tenn., and a member of the St. William Women’s Club. While living in Kissimmee, Florida, she was active in the Red Hat Society. After moving back to the Memphis area, she became a parishioner of Holy Rosary Catholic Church.
Martha was a wonderful cook and a talented decorator, but her priority was always her family. She was a devoted and generous Nana to her grandchildren.
Martha was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, and her husband. She is survived by her son, Erwin Roman (Leigh Ann) of Memphis, her daughter Cynthia Green (Charlie Joe) of Hattiesburg, Miss., her grandchildren Olivia and Joe Roman of Memphis, and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great nephews.
Family and friends are invited to a visitation at Memorial Park Funeral Home from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on July 20. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Holy Rosary Catholic Church at 11:00 am. Interment will take place at Memphis National Cemetery.
