Martha Morris' Obituary
Martha Markham Morris, 71, of Eads, passed away June 26, 2014 at Methodist Le Bonheur Germantown Hospital surrounded by her loving family. The family will receive friends at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, July 5, and a memorial service will begin at 11:00 a.m., at Church of the Holy Apostles, 1380 Wolf River Boulevard, Collierville, TN 38017. A private burial will be held at Memorial Park cemetery. Martha was a graduate of Jackson (TN) High School (class of 1961), and received both undergraduate and graduate degrees from Memphis State (now University of Memphis). She formerly had her own interior design firm, was a professor at Memphis State University, a manufacturer’s representative, and a member of the vestry at St. George’s Episcopal Church. An active volunteer in numerous community projects and organizations, she was well known for the antique lace baptism gowns lovingly made and given away as heirlooms to countless families across the region. Martha was preceded in death by her parents, Tom and Mattie Hopson Markham and her brother, Talmus Markham, all of Jackson, TN. She is survived by her devoted husband of 44 years, Phillip Morris of Eads; three loving children, Keltner Morris (Lisa) of Somerville, Wheeler Morris Alcalá (Alberto) of Germantown, and Gracson Morris (Lisa) of Germantown; and five grandchildren, Maeson Morris, Grace Morris, Markham Morris, Marcela Alcalá, and Matthew Morris who called her Nana. The family would like to thank Drs. Elizabeth Pritchard, Kurt Tauer, Mark Miller, David Sloas, and Robert Kraus; the nurses and staff of Methodist Le Bonheur Germantown Hospital and the Memphis Jewish Home; and Cathy Lipsey, nurse practitioner, for their loving care and concern over the past two years. In lieu of flowers, lasting memorials may be directed to the Church of the Holy Apostles’ Friends of Music fund. Following the service, friends and family are invited to the Alcalá home for a reception celebrating Martha’s life. Directions will be available at the church.
