Martha Sisk Hooper's Obituary
Martha Sisk Hooper, 90, of Byhalia, MS, passed away on August 10, 2023 at the Veterans Home in Oxford, Mississippi.
Martha was born on September 4, 1932 at Baptist Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. Her parents were Eugene Spencer Sisk and Luna Beatrice Haynes. She grew up moving between Blytheville, AR and Memphis, TN along with her older brothers Allison Thurman, also known as AT, and Phillip. Along with her older sisters Gean and Dorothy.
She attended Southside High School in Memphis, TN. Where she met Lamar Hooper, the love of her life. After completing high school she worked for AT&T as a Long Distance Operator. She married Lamar Hooper on December 15, 1952. She moved on from her work at AT&T, to pursue her passion as a homemaker, teaching and leading her sons by example. One such lesson was the caring of family. Her parents couldn’t drive a vehicle. She made sure they were taken to the grocery store, barber shop, doctor appointments, and they could always rely on her for transportation.
Her hobbies were square dancing, bird watching, admiring the flowering gardens, shrubbery and trees throughout their property she found so much joy to watch bloom and mature thru each season of the year, and genealogy. She loved to listen to music and dance. She and Lamar were members of a square dance club. At this club they developed lifelong friendships and memories to share with family. She also enjoyed watching the birds around her property, Lamar had perfectly assembled feeders and fountain baths where she could enjoy watching the Hummingbirds, Cardinals, and other birds land to eat or bathe. Another hobby of hers was to watch and attend The Gaithers shows. Whenever there was a showing nearby she and Lamar would often attend. Lastly, she loved to research family roots. At first this was a manual process to gather information at local libraries, family, and distant relatives across North Eastern Arkansas and West Tennessee. She was an early adopter of the personal computer and the internet. She quickly taught herself how to use these tools to gather genealogy information across the nation and the world without leaving the comfort of her home.
She is survived by her sons along with their wives, Alan and Marianne Hooper, Gary and Tracy Hooper. Along with her five grandkids: Greg, Allison, Nathan, Elizabeth, and Bailey, and her five great grandkids: Gregory, Declan, Atticus, Deming, and Marcie. She is also survived by nieces and nephews.
A special thanks to the Oxford VA and HomeCare Hospice for their extraordinarily personal and special care of Martha.
Family will receive friends and family from 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM on Saturday, August 19, 2023 with service beginning at 2:00 PM at Memorial Park Funeral Home, 5668 Poplar Ave, Memphis, Tennessee 38119.
