Marie Easterwood's Obituary
VESTA MARIE ESTERWOOD, 88, died July 15, 2010 in Memphis, TN. Born October 17, 1922 to Chester V. Easterwood and Louise Etta Thompson Easterwood, Marie graduated from Ole’ Miss with her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Science degrees. She taught at the Teacher’s College of Connecticut in New Britain and after completing another Master’s degree at the University of Texas. Marie taught at Arkansas State University before going to work for Procter and Gamble. Ms. Easterwood was Senior Research Chemist and Lab Manager for Buckeye Cellulose in Memphis. Marie was a member of the American Chemical Society for over 65 years and she served as president of the Memphis Chapter of the ACS. She was a member of the Memphis Camera Club, the Memphis Story Teller’s League, and the Legacy Society at Trezevant Manor. Her ecumenical spirit claimed associations with Bellevue Baptist Church, where she was baptized, Evergreen Presbyterian Church, which she attended both as a young adult and later in retirement and Lindenwood Christian Church, where she served as an elder and Sunday School teacher for some 30 years. She also served as the Chairperson of the Christian Education Ministry at Lindenwood for six years as well as volunteering for many years in the Church Library. While at Lindenwood Christian Church, she made a generous donation to build the Vernon and Etta Easterwood Gallery. Her passion for Christian Unity led her to work with Dr. Paul Crow and the Council on Christian Unity. She was an enthusiastic supporter of ministerial education through her work with Lexington Theological Seminary and Vanderbilt University, where she served on the Board of the Disciples Divinity House. Her entire life was a celebration of the things that she loved so much: reading, sewing, bridge with friends, world travel, teaching and photography and especially her love of Jesus Christ and His church.
