Margaret Hyman Sorrells' Obituary
Margaret Hyman Sorrells, 92, eldest daughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. O. W Hyman, passed away Monday, June 1, 2015. Mrs. Sorrells was preceded in death by her husband, LaValle D. Sorrells; and brothers, Rufus “R.J.” Hyman and Dr. Orren W. Hyman, Jr. She is survived by her children, Jan Hoppe (Joe), Dr. LaValle D. Sorrells, Jr., and Margaret “Peggy” Mullins (Chuck); grandson, Chris Mullins; step granddaughters, Natalie, Jennifer (Phillip), and Samantha; and step great granddaughter, Maddy.Mrs. Sorrells was a graduate of Miss Hutchison School where she was a member of Tau Delta Sigma Sorority. She continued her education, attending Randolph Macon Women’s College in Virginia where she was a member of Alpha Omicron Pi and was graduated in 1944 from School of Journalism at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Mrs. Sorrells served on the Tennessee Federation of Republican Woman as recording secretary; served on the Shelby County Republican Primary Board and served as secretary of the Tennessee Republican Women’s Club. She served on the board of directors of the Central Garden Area Association. In 1974, Mrs. Sorrells was appointed by Mayor Wyeth Chandler to the Shelby County Planning Commission. Mrs. Sorrells was an active volunteer and loved to play bridge. One area which she spent many enjoyable volunteer hours was at Idlewild Presbyterian. Mrs. Sorrells would rearrange Sunday services flowers for delivery to area hospitals.The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the memorial service begins at 11 a.m. Friday, June 5 at Idelwild Presbyterian Church, 1750 Union Ave.Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery, 5668 Poplar Ave. Memphis, TN 38119, “Behind the Stone Wall.”
