Margaret Schutt's Obituary
Margaret Dorr Schutt lived fully for 101 years, from June 2, 1910 to August 2, 2011. As a child, Margie lived in the Chicago suburbs and in upstate New York with her parents and three sisters, Lois, Carolyn, and Mimi, and also, after contracting tuberculosis, traveled to New Mexico with her grandmother, living for a time with relatives. A lifelong learner, Margie graduated from Northwestern University with a B.S. in Geology in 1933. Her passion for learning never ceased, and her interests included theology, genealogy, and ornithology. However, her interests were not just intellectual. At Northwestern, she was president of the Women’s Athletic Association and the Daughters of Neptune synchronized swimming team. She loved her husband Paul and their four children and six grandchildren so much that her whole face would light up just thinking about the entire family getting together. With Paul and the children, she lived in Chicago and Glenview, Illinois; Kenosha, Wisconsin; Rosemont, Pennsylvania; and Harvey, Illinois. In retirement, she and Paul travelled the world, settling in Crystal River, Florida. Images from trips to China, Greece, Africa, Panama, the Galapagos Islands, and Alaska are contained in the hundreds of photos of her life. She was fascinated by the multivarious formations of earth and culture. Her love of chocolate was legendary and extended to tales of eating chocolate pie for breakfast and putting chocolate syrup on ice cream for the dog. Margie was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 64 years, Paul J. Schutt. Margie’s life is joyfully celebrated by her survivors: daughters, Lois Stocker (George, deceased) of Memphis, Tennessee, and Sally Ferguson (Fergy) of Highland, Illinois; sons, Paul L. (Linda) of Chicago, Illinois, and Jerry (Barb) of Niles, Illinois; six grandchildren; and one great-grandson. The Memorial Service to celebrate Margie’s life will take place this Friday, August 5th at 2:30 p.m. at Kirby Pine Retirement Community, 3535 Kirby Road, Memphis, TN (901-365-3665).
