Margaret Schaefer's Obituary
Margaret Lott Schaefer, 86, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on May 27th after a very brief illness.
A lifelong Memphian, Margaret was born on October 29, 1938. After graduation from East High School in 1956, she followed in her brother’s footsteps and attended the University of Oklahoma where she was a member of Chi Omega Sorority before graduating in 1960 and returning to Memphis.
She soon married her “best friend and love of her life” William Wood Schaefer (Billy), also of Memphis, and began a family life that continued intact through her passing.
Margaret was a dedicated wife, mother, volunteer and proud Memphian. She served in volunteer capacity at the Le Bonheur Club of Memphis and ultimately served as club president.
She loved bridge which she played with a cherished group of lifelong friends. Also, she enjoyed travel, tennis, and tried to enjoy golf. She was sports a fan who recorded and watched games, knew players and stats, and even had a Boomer Sooner ringtone. As an empty-nester she and Billy spent many winters enjoying the warmth of Scottsdale, Arizona and they took dozens of cruises to destinations around much of the world. These experiences led to lasting international friendships. Despite her time away she remained a steadfast Memphian, pulling loud and proud for the Tigers and the Grizzlies.
She is preceded in death by her parents Eugene Elton Lott and Marian Nichols Lott, brother Lynn Elton Lott (Shirley).
She is survived by her husband of 64 years, William Wood Schaefer, sons William Mark Schaefer (Heather), Patrick Eugene Schaefer (Mary Lee), and Lee Wood Schaefer (Annie), granddaughters Emmy Schaefer Porchivina (Matthew), Sarah Schaefer Braden (Christian), Ellie Schaefer, Claire Schaefer, Ava Schaefer, and Genevieve Schaefer, and great grandson Matthew Porchivina IV.
Her family would like to express their appreciation to the many friends who have offered support at this time. Services for Margaret Schaefer will be held at Memorial Park Funeral Home & Cemetery, on Saturday, May 31, 2025, at 1 PM. In lieu of flowers the family asks donations that be made to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital.
