Margaret "Peggy" Kallaher's Obituary
Margaret “Peggy” Smith Kallaher passed away suddenly December 26. She was the only child of Margaret and Richard Arthur Smith (Mason, 33rd Degree) and was born and raised in Memphis. She was a graduate of Treadwell HS (Student Body President, class of ’51, Top Rank Lt Col ROTC and cheerleader) and, later, she earned a BA (Communication & Fine Arts, class of ’87) from the University of Memphis. She retired from First TN Bank & the National Bank of Commerce.Life-long lover of dance, Peggy had been a performer with the Memphis Open Air Theatre (MOAT) as an ongoing troupe member; and, later, was a volunteer at Theater Memphis. She was an avid traveller and explored the monuments and museums of London, Paris, Vienna, Barcelona, the great castles of The Rhine, of course New York City (esp Radio City Music Hall where she got a chance to see The Rockettes), and many many other spots around the globe. Being an amateur Egyptologist she was especially fond of her trips to the grand Pyramids of Egypt where the ancient Pharoahs were anxious to consult with her. And she absolutely loved her rounds of bunco with all her high school gang where no doubt many of the world’s troubles were solved several times over (her notes will be published under separate cover as soon as they can be located.)Following in her Mother’s footsteps, she was especially proud of her 25-year membership in the Summer Ave Order of the Eastern Star where she served as Worthy Matron. She was also a member of Zia Temple, Daughters of the Nile #148 where she served as Queen; and was a Supreme Appointee and a member of Abadoys Ballade dance unit.Peggy and her light-heartedness; her bright, shining eyes and quick-to-smile nature will be dearly missed by her family and many friends. She is survived by three children: Ric Kallaher (wife: Annie) of Montauk, NY & Milford, CT; Bill Kallaher (wife: Suzanne) of Sarasota, FL; and Margaret Lisa Beard (husband; Wayne) of Collierville; two grandchildren of whom she was immensely proud, Kyle Beard (currently attending Pellissippi Community College in Knoxville), and Amelia Kallaher (MA in Library & Information Services, Univ of South Florida); and her constant companion, Mackie the Wonderdog, a West Highland Terrier of no small renown. You will be able to see Peggy in her next engagement anytime simply by looking up into the nighttime sky where she will be easily spotted dancing with the stars.
