Margaret Hamsher's Obituary
Mrs. Margaret Walker Hamsher, 97, of Memphis, died of natural causes Tuesday at Kirby Pines Retirement Community. Margaret was born Margaret Walker in Tampa, Florida in 1917. After attending Florida State College for Women, she was accepted at Johns Hopkins School of Nursing. Upon graduation, she joined the U.S. Army in 1943. As a captain, she was stationed in London during the Blitz, where she survived being buried in rubble during a bomb attack on the hospital where she worked. Her nursing unit arrived in Normandy immediately after the D-Day invasion and was positioned 10 days behind the front lines. After the war, she was stationed at Kennedy Hospital as chief operating room nurse, where she met and married Dr. John Hamsher; they were married 52 years before his death. She was an avid bridge player throughout her life. Her leadership qualities were seen in her many activities over the years, which included serving as President, The Coterie; President, Memphis/Shelby County Medical Auxiliary; President, White Station High School Parent-Teacher Association; President, Kirby Pines Kiwanis chapter; and a member of Kirby Pines Past Presidents’ Club. She was a member of Christ Methodist Church. She is survived by her son, Dr. John F. Hamsher of Hilton Head, SC, and her daughter, Mary H. Frakes of Cambridge, MA. The family will receive friends on Friday, September 5, 2014 from 5-7 p.m. The Funeral service will be held Saturday, September 6, 2014 at 1 p.m. All services will be held at Memorial Park Funeral Home. The family requests that any memorials be sent to Christ United Methodist Church.
