Margaret Cox's Obituary
Margaret Lillian Cox, M.D., 81, passed away February 7, 2013. She wasborn January 26, 1932 in Lenoir, NC. She moved to Tennessee with her family and attended Gallatin High School and Vanderbilt University and then graduated from the University of Tennessee Memphis Medical School in March 1960. After her internship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, she completed her internal medicine residency at Louisiana State University Charity Hospital of New Orleans and Kennedy Veterans Hospital of Memphis. From 1965 until her retirement in 1986,Dr Cox was on the medical staff of the Kennedy Veterans Hospital, now known as the Memphis VAMC, where she served as environmental health physician for herbicide and radiation exposure and coordinator for POW exams. Dr. Cox was an outstanding clinician who cared deeply for all her patients. She was a great advocate for education of her patients, medical and nursing students alike. She did not compromise optimal patient care for education, but taught compassion with treatment. Dr Cox was also an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Tennessee and consultant to the University of Tennessee Nurse Clinician Program. She was a member of the Societies American College of Physicians, Southern Medical Association, Memphis Academy of Internal Medicine, ACBL, Peabody Bridge Club, and Lightman Bridge Club. Lillian was a generous friend and generous to many worthwhile organizations. She had a feisty spirit, loved to tell a good story and laughed with gusto. She will be missed greatly for her wisdom and wit by her special friends. She is survived by her brother, HenryW.Coxandseveral nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents,HenryHerscheland Margaret Powledge Cox and brother, David Sibley Cox.
