Marcia Lynn Phillips-Kugele's Obituary
Lynn Phillips Kugele passed away on April 22, 2026, leaving a legacy of brilliance, creativity, and service. A native Memphian, she graduated from White Station High School in 1964 before earning B.S. and M.S. degrees in Mathematics from Memphis State University, an M.B.A. from Christian Brothers University, and a Ph.D. in Finance from the University of Memphis.
Lynn’s nearly 60-year career began at Gordon’s Transports in 1968 as a Programmer Analyst, where she rose to become Director of Marketing R&D. In 1985, she joined Malone & Hyde, serving as Director of M.I.S. Operations and Director of Retail Electronic Services. It was there she met her husband and the love of her life, John Kugele.
In 1998, Lynn transitioned from corporate leadership to academia, joining Christian Brothers University, where she would eventually serve as Department Chair and Dean of the School of Business. In 2008, she became a Clinical Professor of Finance at the University of Mississippi’s DeSoto Center, where she taught until shortly before her passing.
Deeply committed to her faith and community, Lynn was a member of Bellevue Baptist Church, a devoted sister and financial advisor to the Delta Gamma fraternity, and a regular member of The Dilettantes. She served as a docent at the Woodruff-Fontaine House and was active with the FBI Citizens Academy and the Germantown Citizens Police Academy. An avid firearms enthusiast and instructor at Range Master, Range USA, and Top Gun, she also enjoyed competing and socializing with her friends at A Girl & A Gun. Lynn was a tireless advocate for animals, supporting the Germantown and Tunica Animal Shelters.
Lynn was preceded in death by her husband, John Kugele, and her beloved pets Boo, Rocky, Tigger, and Rylee. She is survived by her stepson, Sean Kugele, and his wife, Tammy; her dog, Cooper; many cousins including Brenda Crain, Barbara Williamson, Kim Lowrance, and Joseph "Chip" Crain; and dear friends Patty Thomas, Marilyn McVeigh, and Sarah Pitts.
A memorial service will be held May 2nd at 1:00 p.m. at Memorial Park, with visitation at noon. To honor Lynn, attendees are invited to wear red and black, her favorite colors. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Friends of the Germantown Animal Shelter.
