M.N. (Papaw) Coney's Obituary
The family of M.N. (Papaw) Coney of Memphis, TN are thrilled to announce his recent promotion. In recognition of his dedicating a lifetime of service to his highest Commander, he has been offered a position he could not refuse. While it takes him far away at a distance we can’t follow, we know it is the opportunity he has awaited his whole life.
This assignment comes with a significant sign-on bonus, re-uniting with the love of his life, and meeting both his earthly and Heavenly father for the first time.
With great joy, we send him off for his next grand adventure and look forward to our family’s reunion one day.
Mr. Coney completed his work here on earth on August 6, 2021 at the story-filled age of 101, 8 days shy of 102! He was born on August 14, 1919 in Dallas, Texas to James W. Coney and Birdy Bell Dismuke.
Some of the achievements he was most proud of was serving in the Army during WWII, being personally recognized by former President George W. Bush, becoming a Post Master for the U.S. Postal Service, and teaching himself how to build homes so sought after he was knick-named the “Mayor of Germantown”.
During his lifetime, the fastest route to track him down was to find the closest person in need. A truly humble and generous soul, Mr.Coney was often found sharing his wealth and his time freely. He had the uncanny ability to make anyone feel like the most important person in the room. It is a light whose dimming will not go unnoticed by those he crossed paths with.
He is survived by his children, Myron D. (Beverly) Coney, Mindy (Frank) Roberts and Amy (Gene) Howard; sister, Frances Caldwell; grandchildren, Valerie, Lori, David, Steven Coney, Frank C. Roberts, Michelle Finfrock, Brook Williams, Megan Nickell, Preston C. Howard and Stephanie Carpenter, 23 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive relatives and friends on Wednesday, August 11 at 10:30 a.m. with a funeral service at 11:30 a.m. all in the Fireside Chapel of Memorial Park Funeral Home. Interment to follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.
