Dr. Lyman Carl Anderson's Obituary
Dr. Lyman Carl Anderson, 93, retired dentist, departed this life to be in the presence of his Lord on December 25, 2018, following injuries sustained in an automobile accident.Carl (also affectionately known as “LC” and “Andy” to his many friends) was born on March 25, 1925, to Lyman and Maude Anderson in Baileyton, TN (aka – “God’s Country”). He attended Baileyton High School and graduated from East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, TN. In college, Carl starred as an “All Smokey Mountain Conference” point guard for the East Tennessee State Buccaneers. Carl then journeyed to Memphis where he graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry and also met and married Maxine Bradley, his beloved wife of 41 years. Carl then served in the Navy, defending South Texas from his post in Kingsville, TX during the Korean War, before returning to Memphis to build his dental career and family. Carl and Maxine loved dancing at The Peabody Skyway, traveling out West in a claustrophobic Apache Trailer with their four children, family trips to Destin, a blender of whiskey sours, Sunday night family dinners at Cherrydale, and the many friends they made together. A few years after the death of his wife, Carl was introduced to and married Beverly Wells and they were married nearly 25 years. He and Beverly were active in the Chapel Class at Second Presbyterian Church, where he was a long time member, as well as Truth Seekers Fellowship. Following his 80th birthday and decades of dental practice in the Memphis community, Carl retired. In his later years, he enjoyed serving alongside Beverly in the mother’s day out and nursery ministries of the church where he could often be found strolling babies around the church, taking time to keep up with everyone he met along the way. He was a giant personality who loved life and saw the bright side of every situation.Carl loved oysters on the half shell, a cold Coors Light, UT football, Glenn Miller and Benny Goodman music, a trip to the horse barn, the 1985 MUS State Championship football team, a fried seafood platter, his immaculate yard, sweet tea, country ham, a good or bad cigar, free lunches on his youngest son, and most of all his family. In addition to his wife, Beverly, Carl is survived by his children and their spouses: Lyman Carl Anderson, Jr. (Montye); Karen Anderson Hoffman (Ray); Paul Bradley Anderson (Jennifer), all of Memphis; John Bailey Anderson of Dallas; stepson Geordy Moore Wells (Kelly), fourteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He was also predeceased by a stepson Grayson Dunlap Wells (Colleen).Following a private burial at Memorial Park where Carl will be entombed beside Maxine, a service will be held Saturday, December 29th at 2pm at the chapel at Second Presbyterian Church, followed immediately by a visitation in the Salmon Room. The family requests contributions in Carl’s memory be made to Second Presbyterian Church or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
