Luther C. Underhill's Obituary
Luther C. Underhill, longtime resident of Memphis, TN, and recent resident of Proctor, AR, died on December 14, of pneumonia after a short illness. Luther was born May 11, 1918 in Brazil, MS. He was the son of Charles R. Underhill and Leonora C. Underhill. Luther was raised by his aunt and uncle, Dr. and Mrs. Dunlap n Schlater, MS, with his cousin, Alice Marie Strode of Loganville, GA. He had two brother Henry W. Underhill and Charles H. Underhill. Luther was married to Lucy Anna Wood for 69 years. He was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church for 72 years. He had three sons, James L. Underhill of Hernando, MS, Richard E. Underhill of Proctor, AR, and Thomas E. Underhill of Fort Smith, AR. Luther is also survived by six grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Early in WWII, Luther, working for the US Army Corps of Engineers was involved in the construction of the Walnut Ridge Army Air Field. Luther enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served aboard the fleet tanker USS Mascome, during the battle of Okinawa. The Mascome was present at the signing of the Japanese surrender in Tokyo Harbor. Following the war, Luther worked in Memphis for Refined Metal Corp., retiring as a vice president of personnel and safety. Graveside servi ces will be held at 10:00 am on Friday, December 17, 2010, at Memorial Park Cemetery. The family requests that any memorials be sent to St. John’s United Methodist Church, the Church Health Center, or a charity of the donor’s choice.
